spring break. WHAT A WEEK.
It's a week i will never forget. With the new flight benefits, my mom and i were very optimistic of our endless possibilities as i had a full week off of school. We thought maybe Iceland, maybe Norway, but then decided to stay closer and head to Maui. (again, being very optimistic that wherever we would try to go, we would get there. despite everybody telling us how hard it was.) So, we packed up, and we headed to the airport.
Welp. Didn't get on the first flight to LA. We waited for the next one, and again, did not make it on. However, we got the last two seats on a flight to Long Beach. yippee! We got an Uber to LAX, would sleep there that night, and head to Maui on the first flight out at 8 am. Easy. The night goes by as we lay on the floor of the airport with our stolen airplane blankets. freezing and very slowly. 8 am comes, we don't get on. The next flight at 1 comes, we don't get on. We were stuck in LAX. Not only were we not getting on the flights to Maui, we weren't getting anywhere. The flights were CRAZY FULL. We couldn't get back to Salt Lake, we couldn't get anywhere.
At this point, we are running on very little sleep and for me, very little sanity. I just wanted to be home in the comfort of my house and my warm bed. After spending 24 hours in LAX, we Uber back to Long Beach. Seats are open, and the next second they aren't. It was a miracle we made it on. That is said almost every time, but this time it was a full miracle. So finally, at last, we were home. And accepted the idea that spring break would be spent at home. However, we had an adventure in itself and we were okay with that.
Monday came, and Khloee found a wide open flight to Miami with a wide open flight home. She was going, and told us to come. I was very iffy, having been a little traumatized from the previous standby flying experience. I did not want to spend any more time on an airport floor. The flight coming home had 40+ seats open. It was a given. for sure we would make it home. So, we go. MIAMIIIIIII SOUTH BEACH
The trip turned out SO GOOD. Miami is awesome. I loved it. We went to the beach, ate at Bubba Gumps. All the good stuff. We road tripped to Key West. Drove the Keys. so so pretty! We sailed on a sailboat by ourselves, ate some tacos, watched the sunset at sunset pier, ate some more tacos, had key lime pie on a stick. Very big success. The must dos:
Key West:
sunset pier for sunset
Garbos Grill (best hot dog ever)
key lime pie on a stick
Sandy's Cafe - cuban food. so good
Miami:
South Beach
Wynwood walls - the coolest town full of the most amazing art. unreal!!
As the week came to end, it came time to come back home. That wide open flight that had 40+ seats open? canceled. every other flight to Salt Lake City? or anywhere? Canceled. A huge storm in Atlanta caused hundreds and hundreds of flights to be canceled. This caused a lack of flights, and flight crews to be where they were supposed to be. This was 4 days after the storm!! and the airport was a mess. So here we were again. deja vu!! 5 hours of sitting on the floor went by. Were trying to get anywhere, do anything. Kim suggested driving home. FROM MIAMI. haha that's how desperate we were. When we went to look at rental car prices to drive home, welp. All of the rental cars were completely sold out in all of Miami. As were the hotels. So here we were, truly stuck. again. This time just much, much further away.
Finally, i told Kim i was buying myself a ticket home. The next available one was Monday. 2 days later. When we finally came to terms that that was the only thing we could do, then we realized we had 2 whole days to spare. All i wanted was wifi and an outlet and a bed and i was good. Thankfully, we found a hotel. We took the Metrorail there, which is a story in itself. It took a little longer than we anticipated. But i got Red Lobster that night, my wifi, my outlet, and a bed. I was one happy girl. And after 8 more hours at the airport on Monday, I was on a Frontier flight home...which was THE WORST FLIGHT experience. Not recommended. But hey, I got home! and that's all that matters.
It was quite the week. Full of many ups and downs. But that's what traveling is and I wouldn't give that up for anything!
